HOW DOES RADON GET INTO THE HOUSE?

Radon is natural radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It comes from the natural decay of uranium in rock, soil and water and is found in nearly all soils. As it moves up through the ground to the air above, and creeps into your home, offices, and schools through cracks and other openings in the foundation. Radon gas decays into radioactive particles that can get trapped into your lungs every time you take a breath.

The Radon Lady

You Can Eliminate Indoor Radon - Get Tested Before it Kills You!

Since 1982 Bonnie Kellogg and her staff have been hazardous materials consultants for thousands of Federal, State and Local government agencies, national telecommunications companies, world renown leaders in Silicon Valley technology and other clients as varied as parks and prisons. You may find Bonnie in the scaffolding of a bridge, the tower of a lighthouse on a remote Washington State island or in your own neighborhood talking with concerned citizens about the hazards of asbestos, lead paint... and radon.

Bonnie’s personal mission for 2008 is to make you aware that radon is a serious health threat in every neighborhood in the world … even yours... and to make self-test kits available and affordable for everyone.

Bonnie Kellogg had finished dinner with friend Thom Kubic and houseguest Walter McCrone. It was 1979, and dessert turned out to be an evening session in Thom’s home lab where Walter demonstrated a technique for identifying asbestos with a microscope. Bonnie’s hobbies of rock collecting and polarized light microscopy suddenly intertwined and she was soon listed on the EPA’s registry of “asbestos analysts.”

In 1982 Bonnie won a contract for asbestos inspections in schools throughout seven counties in eastern Kentucky. The following year the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC) invited Bonnie to return for more work, and sponsored her to take a new course created by the National Institute of Safety and Health (NIOSH). This course, NIOSH 582, would become the OSHA standard for sampling and analysis of airborne asbestos.

Bonnie thought she had given up asbestos when she moved to California in 1984. When she was asked to perform asbestos analysis for a large electrical manufacturer, she borrowed two microscopes. Soon half her house had been converted into a laboratory. On December 1, 1986 Bonnie’s new company, KELLCO, had its first offices. (“I remember sitting down on the floor, looking around at the 1200 square feet and crying in sheer terror of what I was doing. Then I stood up and started designing the layout of the lab.”).

KELLCO today is part of a Creative Joint Venture called KELLCO-MACS, of which Bonnie is a Director. KELLCO-MACS provides premier hazardous materials consulting and operates an environmental laboratory for asbestos, lead, mold, e-coli and other environmental hazards. The combined operations employees over thirty people in 10,000 square feet of office, lab and warehouse space.

As part of the California and National radon programs since the early 90’s, Bonnie is dismayed to learn how few people really know and understand the hazards of radon, and how easy it is to remediate. The Radon Lady is a public service of KELLCO-MACS. Air-Chek has graciously made radon test kits available at affordable prices.
Bonnie’s professional certifications include: NEHA/NRRP Measurement Provider #102253RT, California Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC 92-0182), Department of Health Services Lead Inspector, Management Planner, Project Designer (DHS IMD 762), and Registered Environmental Assessor.

Her education includes a BA in “The Languages of Science, English and Computers” from Northern Kentucky University and her MBA from St. Mary’s College. Her interests include motorcycling, photography, travel, fly fishing, bicycling, Pilates, weight training and walking, and making everyone around her aware of the dangers of radon.

Bonnie Kellogg is also the President of Two Wheel Safety Training, and the Director of Calliope Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit that enables job training for individuals whose early lives have prevented them from receiving the education necessary to pursue a livelihood.
